The short answer
Most standard home EV charger installations land between £750 and £1,200, including the charger itself, full installation, surge protection, NICEIC certification, and a 3-year warranty.
Price covers the survey, parts, installation, testing, certification, and warranty — it's a complete service, not just the charger.
Every quote is free, no-obligation, and based on a quick site survey of your property — usually back to you the same day.
Could a Government Grant Reduce Your Cost?
If you're a renter, flat owner, landlord, or business, you could save up to £500 on your installation through the government's OZEV chargepoint grant. That brings a standard home installation down to as low as £250. Homeowners with driveways are not eligible — but for those who do qualify, the process is straightforward and we handle it alongside your installation.
Three things that move the number
EV charger installation pricing isn't one-size-fits-all. The final cost depends on a few practical factors that we'll explain during your free survey. Here are the three biggest:
Distance from the charger to your meter
Cable is one of the more significant material costs on an EV install. If the charger is being mounted right next to your consumer unit, the run is short and the price stays low.
Longer cable runs — for example, fitting the charger on a detached garage at the back of the property — mean more cable, more labour, and sometimes additional containment, all of which add to the cost.
Make and model of charger
Charger brands span a wide price range. Sync Energy is one of the most affordable options we install while still being reliable and well-built. Zappi and Ohme sit in the mid-range with smart features around solar, tariffs, and scheduling.
Hypervolt is at the premium end — it's a sleek, beautifully designed unit that's especially good if you have solar panels, but it costs more up front than the budget options.
Your existing electrical installation
If your property already has a modern consumer unit with RCBOs, surge protection, and a spare way for an extra circuit, the EV install can usually go straight in — no need to upgrade your consumer unit or fit a separate EV charger board.
Older properties with a full board, no surge protection, or no RCD/RCBO protection on the circuits may need a small amount of additional work to bring the installation up to current regulations. We'll always tell you exactly what's needed before we start.
Pricing by brand — from budget-friendly to premium
We install chargers from all of the leading UK brands. The chargers themselves sit at different price points, so the brand you choose has a real impact on your total install cost. Here's how they compare — without committing to exact pounds-and-pence figures that change frequently.
Sync Energy
Solid, reliable, and one of the most affordable smart chargers we install. Comes with a tethered 7.5m Type 2 cable and app-based scheduling — a great choice if you want a quality install without paying for premium aesthetics.
Ohme
Excellent value for drivers on smart tariffs — Ohme automatically charges your car during the cheapest periods on your energy plan, so it tends to pay back its mid-range price over time.
Zappi
Particularly strong if you have solar panels — its eco modes can charge your car using surplus solar energy, which other chargers can't do as well. Mid-range price, premium feature set for solar households.
Evec
Dependable and well priced. A practical choice for workplaces, fleets, and homeowners who want a straightforward smart charger without the higher cost of premium brands.
Hypervolt
The most premium charger we install — beautifully designed, compact, with one of the best apps on the market. Outstanding with solar and a great pick if aesthetics matter as much as performance.
A complete install, not just the charger
When we quote for an EV charger installation, the price covers the full service from start to finish. Here's exactly what's included as standard:
Free site survey to confirm electrical capacity and the best charger location
Supply and installation of your chosen EV charger
Surge protection device fitted as standard to protect your home and vehicle
Full electrical testing and commissioning
NICEIC approved contractor installation certificate
3-year warranty on chargers installed by Oakmont Electrical
When costs might be higher
We'd rather be upfront than surprise you with a bigger bill on the day. A small number of installs cost more than the typical range — here's when and why:
Longer cable runs
If the charger needs to go on a detached garage, outbuilding, or the opposite side of the property, the additional cable, containment, and labour will add to the cost.
Consumer unit upgrade needed
Older boards without RCD/RCBO protection or without a spare way may need upgrading before an EV charger can be safely installed. We'll quote this separately and only if it's genuinely required.
Older properties with remedial work
Some older properties need a small amount of additional electrical work — for example, an earthing upgrade — to bring the installation up to current 18th Edition regulations. We'll always explain what's needed and why.
EV charger installation cost — answered
We get asked the same handful of questions on almost every quote. Here are clear, honest answers — the same answers we'd give you on the phone.
How much does it cost to install a 7kW EV charger in the UK?
Most standard 7kW home EV charger installations in the UK cost between £750 and £1,200, including a quality smart charger, full installation, surge protection, NICEIC certification, and a 3-year warranty. The exact price depends on the charger brand you choose, the distance from your meter to where the charger is being fitted, and whether your existing consumer unit needs any work.
What's the cheapest way to get an EV charger installed?
The cheapest route is usually a budget-friendly smart charger like Sync Energy, fitted close to your existing consumer unit, in a property that already has a modern board with surge protection and a spare way. That keeps both the charger cost and the install labour at the lower end of the range. We'll always quote honestly so you can see exactly where the cost sits.
Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?
Not in most cases. If your existing consumer unit is reasonably modern, has RCD or RCBO protection, surge protection, and a spare way for an extra circuit, we can usually add an EV charger directly without a board upgrade. Older boards without these features may need a small upgrade — we'll check this during your free survey and tell you straight.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
Most standard home EV charger installations are completed in half a day — typically 3 to 4 hours, including testing, commissioning, and walking you through the app. Longer cable runs or any consumer unit work can push that to a full day. We'll give you a realistic time on the day we quote.
What's included in the installation price?
Our price covers the full service: free survey, supply and fit of your chosen charger, surge protection device, full electrical testing, commissioning, NICEIC certificate, and a 3-year warranty on the install. There are no hidden extras — what we quote is what you pay.
Can I get a grant towards my EV charger?
If you're a renter, flat owner, landlord, or business — yes. The government's OZEV grant offers up to £500 towards the cost of your installation, bringing a standard home install down to as little as £250. As an OZEV-authorised installer, we can guide you through the whole process.
Could a grant reduce your installation cost?
Renters, flat owners, landlords, and businesses may qualify for an OZEV grant of up to £500 — bringing a standard installation down to as little as £250. See who's eligible and how the process works.
